Storyboard
For this project, we were asked to choose and analyze a scene of a movie. The analysis focused on the light, angle and atmosphere of the different shots. We choose a portion of the movie Delicatessen, by Jean-Pierre Jeunet.
Character
Their is a total of five characters appearing it this scene, each one is represented by a colored circle.
A full circle represent the character appearing in the scene. A dotted circle represent a character present on the stage, but out of sight.
The scene takes place indoors, in the staircase of an apartment building. The camera(s) are all placed on the middle floor, while in some shots they zoom in to the floors above and below. All lighting appears to be artificial, and the shots are saturated with a strong yellow hue.
Shooting n°1
Full shot – Low angle
The two children are sitting on the stairs, next to each other. The child on the side of the wall is trying to smoke a lit cigarette.

Detail Shot, centered on the foot and the bucket
The door of the apartment is already open. The man comes out with a bucket filled with soap water, a towel and a sponge. He turns around and places the bucket in front of him. The door remains open.

Full shot
The children notice the man. The get up and move closer to observe him. Both children are holding on the handrails.

Medium Close-up Shot
The man turns his head towards the camera and children. He turns back to the door and starts cleaning the door handle with the sponge. He leaves and goes back to the apartment.

The children glance at each other and then resume to their previous position.

The man comes back and moves closer to the base of the staircase, but he does not climb it. He pushes the bucket with the soap water with his foot, while holding a large basket with everything necessary in the center of the bearing. He leaves the basket on the floor and straightens up.
The camera moves slightly up and to the left (viewer’s P.O.V.) to focus on the base of the staircase. The children get up, and come to sit on the base of the staircase.

The man leans towards the bucket, facing away from the camera.
Shooting n°8
Full shot
The man is making bubbles with the soap water and a piece of wire. The children are watching the bubbles, while the man is avoiding them so he does not pop them.

Full shot – High angle
A bubble goes down the stairs and reaches a woman who is going upstairs. She is carrying a shopping bag. The woman stares at the bubble and briefly stops climbing the stairs before continuing.

Repetition of shooting n°8. The man is making bubbles. The children are watching the bubbles, while the man is avoiding them so he does not pop them.

The gentleman is watching the man from upstairs. He leans slightly over the railing.

Full shot
The child with the cigarette coughs. The man stops making bubbles, puts the wire in the bucket, and gets up. The man scolds the child with a strong gesture and takes the cigarette. Ones he has it, he leans away from the children and shakes it a bit.

The woman is slowly climbing the stairs while looking at the scene. She then stops.

Medium Close-up Shot, centered on the man.
The man puts the cigarette and a tube in his mouth. He makes a bubble filled with smoke. Then he makes a normal bubble with the wire around the smoke bubble. The children are watching and leaning closer.

The woman is slowly climbing the stairs while looking at the scene.
Shooting n°17
Full shot
The woman arrives at the floor where the man and the children are at. They all briefly pause and look at each other. The man greets the woman with a nod and the woman climbs upstairs in a hurried pace. The man stares at the woman as she climbs. The children are chatting with each other. The camera remains stationary but adjusts the angle to follow the woman. Once she’s upstairs, it fades to black.
The first movie
The next step was to re-shot the movie, by imitating the different shots as exactly as possible. Special attention has been dedicated to the ambiance of the scene.
The second movie
This video was made by reusing severeal shots from the previous one. The idea was to reuse elements from an existing video to create a whole new story.
